Types of Car Insurance

There are several different types of auto insurance that you can choose from to meet your budget. Your friendly local ABC Insurance agent can help you understand each type of car insurance coverage to help prepare the right policy for you. The following types of car insurance coverage are available for you to choose from:

Bodily Injury Liability

Protects you financially if another driver is injured from an accident that you cause. Bodily injury liability coverage can help pay for their medical expenses but does not help you pay for your own. If you are looking for car insurance coverage that will cover your personal injuries, read more about personal injury protection or medical payment coverage.

Property Damage Liability

Helps you pay for repairs to another driver’s vehicle or other property if you cause the damages. It also covers legal costs should the other driver file a lawsuit against you. Like bodily injury liability, property damage liability coverage also does not cover repair costs to your personal property.

Collision Coverage

Helps pay for damages to your own vehicle if it is hit by another driver or object. Keep in mind that collision coverage often has a deductible, which is the amount of money that you pay out of pocket toward an insurance claim, so make sure to consider this when choosing a policy with collision coverage, and discuss your options with a friendly ABC Insurance agent.

Comprehensive Coverage

Can protect you from unexpected events other than collisions, such as theft, vandalism, animal-related damages, and damages from natural disasters, like flooding, fire, or hail. Like collision coverage, comprehensive coverage can also have a deductible.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Helps cover your medical costs and/or passengers in your car following an accident regardless of who is at fault. PIP can also include coverage for pedestrians that are injured by a vehicle. PIP benefits can also help pay for certain funeral expenses and/or lost wages incurred by you, passengers in your car, or pedestrians. PIP isn’t offered in all states. In some states where it is offered, you have the option to reject it entirely or in part; in other states it is a mandatory coverage.

Medical Payments Coverage

Pays for medical fees if you are hurt in an accident no matter who is at fault. Medical payment coverage can also help cover injuries to your passengers, dental care costs following an accident, medical expenses from pedestrian or bicyclist injuries, and funeral costs. You may notice that medical payments coverage resembles PIP. However, PIP is not available in every state, making medical payments coverage is a great option for those looking for similar coverage as PIP where it is unavailable.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver that does not have insurance or if you’re the victim of a hit-and-run driver. Uninsured motorist coverage can also help pay for medical costs from injuries following an accident. Depending on where you live, uninsured motorist coverage can also help repair property damage to your vehicle if hit by an uninsured driver or from a hit-and-run. In some states you are able to reject this coverage if you do so in writing.

Minimum Limits Auto Insurance

Most states, including Louisiana and Texas, require state minimum car insurance. Bodily injury liability and property damage liability make up the minimum auto insurance coverage that drivers need to be legal. The state minimum car insurance coverage for Louisiana is $15,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person, $30,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per accident, and $25,000 of property damage liability coverage per accident. Texas residents are required to have $30,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person, $60,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per accident, and $25,000 of property damage liability coverage per accident.

Keep in mind that liability car insurance helps you pay for damages that you cause to another vehicle or driver and does not cover damage or injury costs for your personal property. If you want additional coverage, you’ll pay higher premiums but will stay protected if you are found at fault for an accident.

“Full Coverage” Auto Insurance

A bit of a misnomer, “full coverage” is often used to describe an auto insurance policy that includes comprehensive and collision insurance along with liability insurance. Comprehensive and collision coverage often include a deductible. Your car insurance company will take care of the remaining balance, according to the terms of your car insurance policy. Although a car insurance policy that includes comprehensive and collision coverage is more expensive, it provides you with coverage if your vehicle is damaged in a collision or by a hazard that is other than a collision.
